The Prince William County Division of Historic Preservation is seeking candidates for a Historic Site Manager position.  This would be an ideal position for a public history graduate student. The Historic Preservation Division is dedicated to the preservation of Prince William County's historic structures and interiors, archaeological resources, natural resources, and historic landscapes. The Division is tasked with identifying and protecting cultural and historic resources, preservation and rehabilitation of historic sites for public use. The Division manages and maintains an inventory of diverse properties throughout Prince William County and interprets these sites to the public through exhibitions, programs, published research and living history events. The Division is looking for an experienced professional to join the team and to assist with the overall growth of the historic preservation in Prince William County. 

STARTING SALARY RANGE: $47,039.46 to $62,668.06 

PREFERENCES: 
Strong collections management, historic building design and preservation, and cultural resource management skills; Experience using MS office software (primarily Microsoft Word and Excel) and collections database software; An educational and work background in historic preservation, archeology and public history preferred.

The statements in this class specification are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by incumbent(s) assigned to this classification. GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

Performs responsible professional and managerial work involving overall program management of a historic site. Work involves day-to-day operations of a historic site, monitoring public use and implementing historical programs and educational activities.

Work is performed under general supervision of the Historic Preservation Division.

TYPICAL TASKS:

Manages all aspect of visitor programs and activities including staffing, facility use, security, safety, resource protection, visitor control, operating procedures and hours of operation;

Manages site historic artifact collections ensuring compliance with guidelines for interpretation, security and maintenance procedures;

Supervises employees involved in implementing operational decisions on projects, programs, resources protection, and public use of a County historic site;

Monitors public use and implementation of historical programs and educational activities;

Assists in the development and accounting for site and historic annual budget including donated funds;

Purchases supplies, equipment and services for day-to-day operation of a historic site; and ensures that facilities, equipment and property are maintained;

Ensures the facilities are a safe environment for historic site visitors, general public and employees;

Recruits, interviews, and selects applicants for employment at a historic site; and provides training for subordinate employees;

Assigns projects to staff and volunteers; sets priorities and work schedules and evaluates both paid and volunteer staff;

Supervises submission of cash reports and required reporting of management indicators such a visitation, program number and project accounting;

Assists administrative staff in research, writing, implementation and evaluation of site's annual operational plan, project plans, prospectus and interpretive plan, including goals and objectives or delivering programs and services;

Plans, develops and implement site programming and interpretation including the planning, development and evaluation of site events, tours, exhibits, museum education and outreach programs;

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of historical research procedures; thorough knowledge of American and regional history and thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of historic education and interpretation; thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of facility management, thorough knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of historical parks or museum management; thorough knowledge of curatorial practices and procedures; ability to conduct comprehensive historical research and prepare factual reports on historical issues; ability to provide technical resources and program leadership to historical staff; ability to perform effective administrative work including budgeting, human resource management, purchasing and revenue accounting; ability to manage and operate interpretation/conservation programs at a historic site; ability to coordinate major special activities; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with specialty consultants such as archeologist, architects, engineers, historians, County employees and the general public; ability to perform duties and responsibilities independently within established polices and procedures.
 Education and Experience:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in American History Studies, Archeology, Museum Education or a closely related field; and 2-3 years experience in museum or historical site interpretation and education to include 1-2 years supervisory experience.

Must possess a valid operator's license;

Must pass DMV record check.
