It was from a tarball, version 1.5 (downloaded a few days ago).

I'm happy to try the latest build, but it looks like the svn server is down:

$ svn checkout http://mason.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ mason-read-only
svn: OPTIONS of 'http://mason.googlecode.com/svn/trunk': could not connect
to server (http://mason.googlecode.com)
