The Honors College is pleased to host Turkish scholars Dr. Suna Gulfer
Ihlamur and Mr. Onur Oner April 16-20. Please invite your students and
colleagues to join us for a week-long series of lectures, film
screenings and concerts that highlight the richness of Turkey's
history and culture as well as its importance in global affairs.

Tuesday, April 17th

"From Ottoman Classical Music to Mevlevi Spiritual Music" with Ney
Player: Onur ÖNER
Center for the Arts Lobby at 2:00pm

Join Mr. Onur Oner for a performance of the Classical Music of the
Ottoman Court.   Mr. Oner plays the ney, one of the main instruments
of this traditional music that also has a special place in the Turkish
Mevlevi-Sufi tradition.  The concert will be followed by a discussion
with Mr. Oner.

Honors College Current Events Series Presents Turkey and the Conflict in Syria
Lecture Hall Room 3 at 7:15pm

Dr. Suna Gulfer Ihlamur and Dr. Bassam Haddad will speak about the
recent conflicts in Syria and the role that Turkey is playing in their
wake.  They will also answer questions about how the conflict is
affecting Turkey and the rest of the Middle East.
Mediterranean-themed food will be served at this talk.

  Wednesday, April 18th

Asylum Policy and Practices in Turkey
Johnson Center Meeting Room E at 3:00pm

Dr. Suna Gulfer Ihlamur who is a lecturer in Marmara University of
Istanbul’s science and international relations department will be
presenting a comparative analysis of refugee flows from Bulgaria,
Iraq, and Syria into Turkey.  The talk will focus on policy stances
and practices that influence the Turkish asylum and refugee regime.
She will also address recent changes and developments in the policy
stances adopted by Turkey toward different refugee flow.

An Evening with Karagoz and Hacivat:  A Glimpse at Traditional Turkish
Shadow Puppet Theater
SUB II Ballroom at 4:30pm

“An Evening with Karagoz and Hacivat” is a family oriented event which
will include two traditional Turkish shadow puppet performances as
well as a slide assisted talk detailing the history and development of
Turkish shadow puppet theater and its relationship to other forms of
shadow theater around the globe.  Following the presentation, a family
workshop will be held in which children and adults will be encouraged
to construct their own Karagoz and Hacivat shadow puppets to take
home, and learn how to make a small table top theater for home use.
All supplies will be provided, and performances will be in English.
Traditional Turkish sweets and tea will also be served for all to
enjoy.

Thursday, April 19th

Turkish Movie Night:  Yahsi Bati
Eastern Shore Multipurpose Room at 6:00pm

Come out for free pizza and a movie!  Yahsi Bati is a 2010 Turkish
comedy which stars Cem Yilmaz as a special agent tasked by the Sultan
of the Ottoman Empire to deliver a diamond gift to the American
President.  As they ride on a stagecoach across the American Wild
West, they are robbed of the diamond by some bandits, leaving them
stranded without any money.
