HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING FOR ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE APPLIED TO FINANCE
Mission
The HPIAF project is a two years project funded by EXQIM S.A.S. and is
concerned with the application of evolutionary computation to the production
and improvement of trading automata. The amount of data to be processed
requires the use of parallel architectures. The selected candidate is expected
to study, define, implement and evaluate the appropriate evolutionary
algorithms and their parameters, as well as design, implement, test and
evaluate parallel versions of the algorithms with predictable performance.
The post-doctoral researcher will work in close collaboration with LIFO's HPIAF
researchers (Pr F. Loulergue and Dr M. Bamha) and with EXQIM researchers who
have a long experience of industry-academia research collaboration. This
collaboration will involve sharing realistic datasets and parallel systems made
available by EXQIM, sharing and interfacing software libraries with EXQIM while
combining regular web-conferences with a moderate amount of travel to Paris
where EXQIM is based.
About EXQIM and LIFO
EXQIM - EXclusive Quantitative Investment Management is a company in the legal
form of a société par actions simplifiée (S.A.S.), registered under French law
since June 17, 2009, with a capital of €650,020. EXQIM has been approved by the
AMF since October 2010 as an asset management firm, and is to launch its first
fund in Luxembourg in the first quarter of 2011.
EXQIM's business objective is to generate returns for its funds using
proprietary investment strategies with an exclusively quantitative and
well-diversified approach.
The founding of EXQIM rests on the following observations:
- Machines do not make mistakes and are more efficient than human beings
(faster detection & execution, no emotions).

EXQIM has three fundamental pillars:
- A department for applied financial mathematics research, which develops

The Computer Science laboratory of the University of Orleans (LIFO,
http://www.univ-orleans.fr/lifo) is a research and doctoral training unit
recognised and funded by the French Ministry of Research. The laboratory
specialises in software science. The Parallelism, Virtual Reality and
Verification group conducts research on parallel computing and verification
and hosts PC clusters for its experiments and for the benefit of its industrial
partners. This work has been rewarded by international, national and regional
grants. The group's techniques for scalable performance are applied to
numerical
simulation, databases and machine learning. LIFO is a member of the Cascimodot
cluster federating Loire Valley-region laboratories involved in numerical
simulations.
Profile
The candidate must hold a doctorate in Computer Science with experience in some
of the following areas:
- genetic algorithms
- genetic programming
- machine learning
- parallel algorithms and applications
- parallel programming languages and applications.
The candidate must also be interested in producing high quality
research reports
and software documentations.
Knowledge of French is not required but language courses can be made available.

Overview
========
The first Cross-domain Heuristic Search Challenge seeks to bring together
practitioners from operational research, computer science and artificial
intelligence who are interested in developing more generally applicable
search methodologies. The challenge is to design a search algorithm that works
well, not only across different instances of the same problem, but also across
different problem domains.
The competition is organised and run by the Automated Scheduling, Optimisation
and Planning (ASAP) group at the University of Nottingham, Nottingham, UK
(http://www.asap.cs.nott.ac.uk/), with partners from Queen's University,
Belfast, UK, Cardiff University, UK and the cole Polytechnique, Montreal,Canada.

The current prize fund is 3,000 GBP, to be split between the first, second
and third place competitors.

Description
===========
The Cross-domain Heuristic Search Challenge differs from other competitions in
search and optimisation, as it aims to measure performance over several problem
domains rather than just one. We propose a software framework featuring a
common software interface (called HyFlex) for dealing with different
combinatorial optimisation problems. HyFlex provides the algorithm components
that are problem specific. In this way, we simultaneously liberate algorithm
designers from needing to know the details of the problem domains; and prevent
them from incorporating additional problem specific information in their
algorithms. Efforts can instead be focused on designing high-level strategies
to intelligently combine the provided problem-specific algorithmic components.

As software engineering is requested to answer dynamic, automated, adaptive,
optimal and/or large-scale demands, other computer science disciplines come to
play. Artificial Intelligence is one of them that may bring software
engineering into further height. Conversely, software engineering techniques
also play an important role to alleviate development cost and time of AI
techniques as well as assist in introducing new AI techniques. Such mutually
beneficial characteristics have appeared in the past few decades and still
evolved due to new challenges. Several exemplified challenges include, but not
limited to, how machine learning addresses software optimization problems
derived from new software approaches (e.g., model-driven engineering,

Matheuristics are increasingly gaining interest in the optimization research
community as a means to get model grounded good quality feasible solutions
for complex optimization problems. The range of problems for which
matheuristic techniques have proved effective has widened, going from the
most theoretic ones to actual real-world case studies. This has been
possible because the range of matheuristic techniques has similarly widened,
showing the high research potential of studies aimed at the design of
generic heuristic methods based on mathematical formulations of the problem
of interest.
This session aims at bringing together the researchers exploiting
mathematical programming (MP) techniques in a metaheuristic framework or
working on granting to mathematical programming approaches the
constrained-CPU-time effectiveness which characterizes metaheuristics.
Topics of interest for the session include but are not limited to studies
on:
* Novel matheuristic frameworks;
* Dual information and decomposition in metaheuristics;
* Hybridizing metaheuristics with exact methods;
* Experimental analysis and modeling of matheuristics;
* Real world case histories of matheuristic applications.
* Metaheuristics as exact method components.
Submissions to the special sessions will be through the same submission site
and under the same rules as for the main conference.
Submission Details
==================
We will accept submissions in three different formats.
S1) Original research contributions for publication in the
conference proceedings of a maximum of 10 pages;
S2) Extended abstracts of work in progress and position papers on an
important research aspect of a maximum of 3 pages;
S3) High-quality manuscripts that have recently, within the last six
months, been submitted or accepted for journal publication.
Accepted contributions of categories S1 and S2 will be published in the MIC
2011 conference proceedings. The proceedings will have an ISBN number. Accepted
contributions of category S3 will be orally presented at the conference, but
will not be included into the conference proceedings (neither in the
post-conference proceedings). The submission server will be available in
January 2011.
Post-conference Publication
===========================
It has become a tradition of MIC to publish post-conference proceedings in
an edited book. Authors of accepted papers in categories S1 and S2 (see
submission details) are invited to submit improved and extended versions of
their conference papers for publications in the MIC 2011
post-conference volume.
The post-conference volume will appear in the Operations Research / Computer
Science Interfaces series of Springer Verlag (confirmation pending).
