4. Government volunteers needed: Help maintain a digital image library
The Biological Informatics Office of the U.S. Geological Survey is
currently recruiting volunteers to work at the program office in Reston,
Virginia. Volunteers would assist with the support of the digital image
library named LIFE (Library of Images From the Environment).
The library is a repository of biological images available to scientists,
educators, students and others for the illustration of subjects, research
and species identification. At this time, the number of images being
contributed to LIFE is vastly increasing, and assistance is needed to
input images and to validate image resolutions, scientific content and the
associated data. Occasionally, research will be required on specific
biological subjects, on other image galleries or on information science
techniques. In the process, the volunteer will learn the methods of how
biological information is shared in distributed networks in addition to
acquiring, photo management, metadata and internet-library skills.
- U.S. citizenship required
- Undergraduate degree is highly desired
- Experience in biology or earth sciences, photography, photo editing,
library science, XML schema, Spanish and/or spreadsheets/statistics is a
plus.
If interested, please email Susanne Underkoffler, LIFE Volunteer
Coordinator, or call 703-648-4088.
