on Consumer Games and Graphics Hardware (CIGPU 2009) will be held in

Everyone who has implemented an evolutionary algorithm or other computational
intelligence approach using graphics processing units (GPUs), video game
systems, mobile devices, cellular phones, etc. will want to submit to this
workshop. Due to its speed, price, and availability, there is increasing
interest in using mass consumer market commodity hardware for engineering and
scientific applications. Mostly this has concentrated upon graphics hardware,
particularly GPUs, due to their ability to offer teraflop performance on a
desktop using a restricted form of parallel computing (known as "General Purpose
computing on Graphics Processing Units", or "GPGPU"). There is also increasing
interest in using the computing power of game consoles such as Microsoft's Xbox,
Sony's Playstation and the Cell processor, and portable entertainment and/or
cellular phone mobile devices for research and applications.
Submissions are invited in (but not limited to) the following areas:
- Parallel genetic programming (GP) on GPU
- Parallel genetic algorithms (GA) on GPU
- Parallel evolutionary programming (EP) on GPU
- Associated or hybrid computational intelligence techniques on GPU

Research in Evolutionary Computing (EC) for engineering design has a long
history. Early applications of EC in engineering design can be traced back to
the 1960's in areas such as fluid mechanics, pipe design and structural
engineering. This field has seen further significant advances in the last two
decades. Since then research in this area has been expanding to a large spectrum
of engineering design problems from numerous disciplines. Having been
successfully applied to solve several engineering design problems, EC has
demonstrated some important advantages compared to conventional design and
optimisation techniques. Different methods have been developed in EC to tackle
different problem characteristics and domains. Multi-objective optimisation and
co-evolution are two examples of this.
This call for papers is soliciting original contributions to research with
relevance to the application of Evolutionary Computing to Engineering Design.
The selected papers will highlight the state-of-the-art, emerging technologies
and recent successes, and will define major research challenges. Topics of

The workshop will focus on advances in using symbolic modeling for real world
problems in industry, economics, finance and science. Papers are sought that
contribute to the state of the art in symbolic modeling, either through
innovative applications, theoretical work on issues of generalization, size
and comprehensibility of the results produced, and algorithmic improvements
to make the techniques faster, more reliable and generally better controlled.
The workshop will be a half-day, with 60% talks, 40% brainstorming/panel
discussion. Each presentation will be a half an hour. To present, please

Advances in metaheuristics for hard optimization: new trends and case studies

AIM & SCOPE
In recent years, metaheuristics have become important tools for solving hard
optimization problems encountered in industry as well as in the theoretical
field. Many different metaheuristics exist (and new ones are under constant
development). Some of the most famous ones are Evolutionary Algorithms, Tabu
Search, Simulated Annealing, GRASP, Ant Systems, Memetic Algorithms,
Particle Swarm Optimization,...This special issue aims at bringing together
outstanding research and recent developments in the field of metaheuristics
and their applications in the industrial world.
The topics of this special issue include but are not limited to methodological
developments aimed at adapting some metaheuristics to various industrial
problems, which handle continuous variables, or miscellaneous continuous and
discrete variables; theoretical and experimental studies on metaheuristics,
e.g., convergence analysis, performance evaluation methodology, test-case
generators, constraint handling, etc.; software implementations and algorithms
for metaheuristics; real-life applications of metaheuristics; performance
comparisons of metaheuristics with competing approaches; new metaheuristics;
hybrid metaheuristics; metaheuristics for dynamic optimization.
We encourage submissions from academia or submissions from practitioners
describing real case studies. The aim of this CFP is then to focus on new trends
and case studies. Both highly prospective and technical (industrial feasibility)
papers are welcomed but have to suit to Elsevier standards.

This full day workshop will involve presentations by approximately 12 selected
students pursing research in some aspect of evolutionary computation. Students
will make 15-20 minute presentations to an audience that will include a 'mentor'
panel of established researchers in evolutionary computation. Presentations will
be followed by a 10 minute question and discussion period led by the mentor
panel.
To present, submit a 4-page paper to

their presentation style. Other attendees will benefit by learning about current
research, engaging in technical discussions and meeting researchers with related
interests. Other students are encouraged to attend as a means of strengthening
their own research.
The group of presenting students will be chosen with the intent of creating a
diverse group of students working on a broad range of topic areas.

Thematic Issue on "Memetic Algorithms for Evolutionary Multi-objective
Optimization"
As an emerging field within computational intelligence, Memetic algorithms
(MAs) have attracted more and more interests in recent years. In general,
MAs are population-based meta-heuristic search methods that are inspired by
Darwinian principles of natural selection and Dawkins' notion of a meme. In
the literature, MAs are also referred to as hybrid evolutionary algorithms
(EAs), Baldwinian EAs, Lamarckian EAs, cultural algorithms, or genetic local
search. With the help of local improvement procedures or synergy between
different computational frameworks, MAs are reported to be capable of
obtaining high quality solutions more efficiently than the conventional EAs.
Their successes have been revealed on a wide variety of real world problems
including multi-objective (MO) optimization problems, which have been one of
the most active research topics in the field of evolutionary computation. In
accordance with the increasing popularity of both MAs and Evolutionary
Multi-objective Optimization (EMO), we are organizing this thematic issue on
"Memetic Algorithms for Evolutionary Multi-objective Optimization" to bring
together the most recent advances on the research topic and enrich our
understanding of the relevant research areas.
This thematic issue is devoted to the current state-of-the-art in the theory
and practice of MAs for multi-objective optimization. Topics of interests
include, but are not limited to:
. Theoretical analysis of MAs' performance on EMO
. Novel approaches that adopt the general idea of MAs to tackle
multi-objective optimization problems, either continuous or combinatorial
. Empirical comparative studies that reveal how, why and when the MAs
outperforms conventional EAs on MO problems
. Application of Multi-objective MAs to real-world problems

The Twelfth International Workshop on Learning Classifier Systems
(IWLCS 2009) will be held in Montreal, Canada, Thursday, July 9, 2009
during the Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference
(GECCO-2009), July 8-12, 2009.
Originally, Learning Classifier Systems (LCSs) were introduced by John
H. Holland as a way of applying evolutionary computation to machine
learning and adaptive behavior problems. Since then, the LCS paradigm
has broadened greatly into a framework that encompasses many
representations, rule discovery mechanisms, and credit assignment
schemes.
Current LCS applications range from data mining, to automated
innovation and the on-line control of cognitive systems. LCS research
includes various actual system approaches: While Wilson's accuracy-
based XCS system (1995) has received the highest attention and gained
the highest reputation, studies and developments of other LCSs are
usually discussed and contrasted. Advances in machine learning, and
reinforcement learning in particular, as well as in evolutionary
computation have brought LCS systems the necessary competence and
guaranteed learning properties. Novel insights in machine learning and
evolutionary computation are being integrated into the LCS framework.
Thus, we invite submissions that discuss recent developments in all
areas of research on, and applications of, Learning Classifier Systems.
IWLCS is the event that brings together most of the core researchers
in classifier systems. Moreover, a free introductory tutorial on LCSs
is presented the day before the workshop at GECCO 2009. Tutorial and
IWLCS workshop thus also provide an opportunity for researchers
interested in LCSs to get an impression of the current research
directions in the field as well as a guideline for the application of
LCSs to their problem domain.

All accepted papers will be presented at IWLCS 2009 and will appear in
the GECCO workshop volume. Proceedings of the workshop will be

for 2010), in the Springer LNCS/LNAI book series.
