In Brief — Getting the Word Out
These days it’s not easy to keep up with so many changes at the Volgenau School. We’re hiring new faculty, enrolling more students, opening new spaces, and growing research at an amazing pace. Everyone is busy, but sometimes outside opportunities give us the extra nudge to help us collect and share information about work and school. Two such opportunities for students are ramping up this fall — the 60-second video contest, and the 3MT®
The 3MT® is a research communication competition where PhD students present their doctoral research to a non-specialist audience using only one single visual aid—all in three minutes. The contest started at the University of Queensland and has grown to become an international phenomenon. During the last two years, many Volgenau students have participated and earned prizes. The Graduate Studies Office and I have coached the students on story-telling and presentation and we have leverage these presentations into feature articles and photos for our external audiences. It has been great fun and I’m looking forward to another outstanding series this year.
The second opportunity for all students, graduate and undergraduate, is one we call the 60-Second Video Contest. The inspiration for the contest came during an American Marketing Association conference Stephen Nash and I attended in 2017. We knew we wanted to use more video in the school’s communications but were stumped on how to make it feasible. As we attended workshops, we brainstormed and came up with the idea of a student contest. We will be having this contest again and, once again, awarding prizes during Engineer’s Week. I’m not expecting the competition to attract international attention, but Stephen and I are presenting our ideas and findings at the District Conference for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education in February, so who knows?

Civil engineering senior Tyler Miesse works with Celso Ferreira, associate professor in civil, environmental, and infrastructure engineering, on research that focuses on how vegetation in coastal marshes can protect communities from waves and flooding.
· Behzad Esmaeili’s research team receives American Society of Civil Engineering's best paper award<https://volgenau.gmu.edu/news/572741>. Esmaeili’s research team received the 2018 Best Paper Award for a journal article they published in the ASCE Journal of Management in Engineering titled “Measuring the Impacts of Safety Knowledge on Construction Workers’ Attentional Allocation and Hazard Detection Using Remote Eye-Tracking Technology.
