This Week at the Volgenau School
Later today there will be a meeting of the School's Graduate Studies committee. Sort of.
Not for the first time, we've also invited faculty and staff who oversee our various graduate programs. Today's meeting is part of a larger project for enhancing recruitment and retention at the graduate level. If this project is going to be successful then it will require broad participation within the School.
There are a lot of activities that contribute to recruitment and retention.
We need to communicate about our programs. In brief, we need to answer two basic questions: Why choose Mason? Why choose this program?
We need to recruit. Part of this is internal, since many Mason graduate students are former undergraduates. We also need to work with corporations and government agencies, since their employees become our students. Recruitment for doctoral students is particularly challenging, since they come to us from around the world and have goals that may align with individual faculty members.
But this isn't all. We need to respond rapidly to inquiries, no matter how they arrive. We need to have good processes for admissions. We need to make competitive funding offers to doctoral students. We need to understand and exploit all the relevant sources of data. And on and on.
It's a big project. Today our goal is to make people aware of all the data sets that are available, and how to use them to get insight into their own programs. One step on a long journey.

NSF Advance workshop at Mason (Fri Feb 10)
A team of faculty are interested in gathering feedback from our community in preparation for possible submission of a NSF ADVANCE Institutional Transformation grant. There will be a half-day workshop on Friday, February 10 from 9-noon in Merten Hall, Room 1201. The goal of the event, Enacting Equity: A Conversation for Change with NSF ADVANCE, is to understand the organizational barriers at Mason that limit the advancement and inclusion of diverse faculty and to create a working agenda in conjunction with an NSF grant proposal to eliminate these barriers. President Cabrera, Provost Wu, and VPR Crawford will be there, as we hear from experts from around the country on the goals, purposes, and opportunities for change with this grant program. Light refreshments will be served.

Mason's Graduate and Professional Student Association (GAPSA) invites students to participate in the 2017 Mason Graduate Interdisciplinary Conference on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Founders Hall at George Mason University's Arlington Campus. This one-day event will showcase graduate student research across disciplines through posters, presentations-and new this year-a 3MT(tm) competition.
Eligibility: Applicants must be current graduate students at George Mason University. Team presentations must include at least one current Mason graduate student.

Pitch IT 2017 (Sat Apr 22)
LITE (the Laboratory for IT Entrepreneurship) is hosting Pitch IT 2017 o Saturday, April 22.
Pitch IT 2017 is the fourth edition of LITE's business idea competition. The competition is open to all teams with at least one Mason student. Participants will compete for grants totaling $2,000. Students will present their business ideas to a panel of judges including faculty, entrepreneurs, and other business experts. Participants will have the opportunity to get funding, receive valuable feedback, and enhance their ability to present and market their ideas to early stage investors (i.e., angel investors, family and friends).
The fourth Pitch IT competition will take place on Saturday, April 22, 2017, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm in Research Hall 163, on the Fairfax Campus of George Mason University. Registration is required to participate. Synopsis: The Mind, Machine and Motor Nexus (M3X) program supports fundamental research at the intersection of mind, machine and motor. A distinguishing characteristic of the program is an integrated treatment of human intent, perception, and behavior in interaction with embodied and intelligent engineered systems and as mediated by motor manipulation. M3X projects should advance the holistic analysis of cognition and of embodiment as present in both human and machine elements. This work will encompass not only how mind interacts with motor function in the manipulation of machines, but also how, in turn, machine response and function may shape and influence both mind and motor function.

Mike Hieb and Mark Pullen of the C4I & Cyber Center, Jan Allbeck of the Computer Science Department, and Andrew Crooks of the College of Science received $375K from DARPA for their project, "Megacities Command and Control Assessment Capability."

Bijan Jabbari is Issued a Patent
Bijan Jabbari of the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department was issued the following patent by the US PTO.
Title: Label switched packet transfer device
Inventors: Bijan Jabbari, Esmael Dinan, and Rajiv Papneja
Number: US 9,515,915 B2
Esmael Dinan received his PhD from the Volgenau School in 2001, and now has his own company called Ofinno Technologies. Rajiv Papenja works for Huawei.
