Update on Additional Holiday Leave Hours and Monday Holiday Reminder

In our Instant HR/Payroll of December 20th, we announced that the Governor granted an additional 4 hours of holiday leave for Tuesday, December 31, 2013. Because Mason was already closed for winter break, the 4 hours have been added to eligible employee's leave balances as a special flex holiday. The hours can be used through December 24, 2014.

As a reminder, next Monday, January 20, is Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday. Mason will be closed to observe the holiday.

Enjoy your holiday!

Our Staff Senate colleagues have asked us to let you know about the following:

Winter 2014 Staff Appreciation Coffee Klatch

The Mason Staff Senate invites all classified and non-student wage employees to the Winter 2014 staff appreciation coffee klatch. Held on each campus, the coffee klatches are Mason's opportunity to show staff members its appreciation for their hard work. Events at this winter's klatch include a parfait bar, raffle prizes, info fair, photo booth, visits from Gunston, and a used professional men's and women clothing drive on behalf of Human Resources and Payroll.

No registration is necessary, but all staff members must bring their Mason ID cards indicating they are either a classified or non-student wage employee.

Spend the morning catching up with colleagues from across campuses and chatting with Staff Senators. Come rain or shine, but not snow,* for a morning dedicated to you!

Coffee Klatches on all three campuses:

* Prince William, Wednesday, January 29, 9:30 - 11:30, Bull Run Atrium (*snow date: Monday, February 3)

*         Arlington, Wednesday, February 5, 9:30 - 11:30, 125 Founders Hall  (*snow date: Monday, February 10)

*         Fairfax, Wednesday, February 12, 9:30 - 11:30, Patriot Lounge, Sub I(*snow date: Monday, February 17)

Upcoming Faculty Process and Titling Changes

To help ensure consistency in the hiring process, all administrative/professional faculty job offers will be reviewed by Human Resources and Payroll prior to an offer being made to the candidate. Additionally, departments are to work with Human Resources and Payroll prior to creating any new administrative/professional faculty position or when converting an existing classified staff position into an administrative/professional faculty position. Appropriate review and approval of salary comps will also be conducted by Human Resources and Payroll prior to any offer being extended. When positions cross organizational lines (e.g. development officers in a unit) the appropriate vice president must approve the position and proposed compensation. Excluded from this process change are instructional/research faculty, adjunct faculty, and non-salaried positions.

Key Points

Before any offer letters are sent or contracts signed, the Human Resources and Payroll Department will conduct the following:

Thorough review of offer letter/contract

Supervisory reference check (when top candidate is current or past Mason employee)

Rehire status review

Responsibility

Hiring managers will be responsible for contacting Human Resources and Payroll in a timely manner when seeking to hire a new administrative/professional faculty member or when converting an existing position into an administrative/professional faculty position.

Human Resources and Payroll will be responsible for reviewing all offer letters and contracts, conducting a supervisory reference check review, and completing a rehire status review for administrative/professional faculty hiring.

The sessions are from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. All sessions will take place in Innovation Hall, Room 334. These sessions are walk-in and appointments are not needed.
