This Week at the Volgenau School

A team of Bioengineering seniors has created a prosthetic arm so a local girl can play the violin.

Isabella Nicola is a fifth-grader at Island Creek Elementary in Fairfax County. She was born without a left hand, but she wanted to play the violin. Her teacher - a Mason alum - contacted Mason and spoke to Susan Brionez in Volgenau¡¯s Student Services office. The path next let to Laurence Bray, who is teaching the Bioengineering senior project class, and through her to a team led by professors Vasiliki Ikonomidou and Wil Joiner.

And on Thursday, after months of work, multiple prototypes, extensive research, and guidance from one of Mason¡¯s music professors, Isabella and the students unveiled the results to the world.

It¡¯s a magical story. And it was moving to watch Isabella try on her new arm, pick up her violin, and start to play. But don¡¯t just take my word for it. Check out the videos from NBC<http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/Students-Use-3D-Printer-To-Create-Prosthetic-Arm-For-Young-Violinist_Washington-DC-420037703.html> and ABC<http://wjla.com/news/local/born-with-only-1-hand-va-girl-learns-to-play-the-violin-with-her-new-3d-printed-hand>, the story from the Washington Post<https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2017/04/24/a-10-year-old-virginia-girl-without-a-hand-wanted-to-play-violin-now-she-can/?utm_term=.40f844196ad7>, or one of the many other stories mentioned below under ¡°VSE in the News.¡±

Let¡¯s all congratulate the students for such fine work: Abdelrahman Gouda, Mona Elkholy, Ella Novoselsky, Racha Salha, and Yasser Alhindi.

Funding Opportunity: Research Initiation Initiative (NSF/CISE)

Opportunity Title: Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Research Initiation Initiative (CRII)
Sponsor: Directorate for Computer and Information Sciences and Engineering/NSF
Deadline Date: 09-Aug-2017
Program URL: https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2017/nsf17552/nsf17552.htm
Synopsis: With the goal of encouraging research independence immediately upon obtaining one's first academic position after receipt of the PhD, the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) will award grants to initiate the course of one's independent research. Understanding the critical role of establishing that independence early in one's career, it is expected that funds will be used to support untenured faculty or research scientists (or equivalent) in their first three years in a primary academic position after the PhD, but not more than a total of five years after completion of their PhD. One may not yet have received any other grants or contracts in the Principal Investigator (PI) role from any department, agency, or institution of the federal government, including from the CAREER program or any other program, post-PhD, regardless of the size of the grant or contract, with certain exceptions noted below. Serving as co-PI, Senior Personnel, Postdoctoral Fellow, or other Fellow does not count against this eligibility rule. Grants, contracts, or gifts from private companies or foundations; state, local, or tribal governments; or universities do not count against this eligibility rule.
