This Week at the Volgenau School
A team of Bioengineering seniors has created a prosthetic arm so a local girl can play the violin.
Isabella Nicola is a fifth-grader at Island Creek Elementary in Fairfax County. She was born without a left hand, but she wanted to play the violin. Her teacher - a Mason alum - contacted Mason and spoke to Susan Brionez in Volgenau’s Student Services office. The path next let to Laurence Bray, who is teaching the Bioengineering senior project class, and through her to a team led by professors Vasiliki Ikonomidou and Wil Joiner.
And on Thursday, after months of work, multiple prototypes, extensive research, and guidance from one of Mason’s music professors, Isabella and the students unveiled the results to the world.
It’s a magical story. And it was moving to watch Isabella try on her new arm, pick up her violin, and start to play. But don’t just take my word for it. Mason Korea Information Session (Tue May 2, 1pm)

Results of Pitch IT 2017

The 4th edition of Pitch IT was held on April 22. We had a record number of presentations (11), selected out of a pool of about 20 teams who expressed interest in participating.

Synopsis: With the goal of encouraging research independence immediately upon obtaining one's first academic position after receipt of the PhD, the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) will award grants to initiate the course of one's independent research. Understanding the critical role of establishing that independence early in one's career, it is expected that funds will be used to support untenured faculty or research scientists (or equivalent) in their first three years in a primary academic position after the PhD, but not more than a total of five years after completion of their PhD. Jill Nelson Receives Toups Teaching Medal
Jill Nelson of the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department has been selected to receive the inaugural Toups Presidential Medal for Faculty Excellence in Teaching. This award1 is presented to a faculty member whose teaching inspires and stimulates students in the finest tradition of higher education. The medal will be awarded at the Commencement ceremony on May 20, 2017.
