As a reminder, this Thursday, Nov. 15 will be the second VSE/COS Research Luncheon of the semester. This week's luncheon will be hosted by COS and take place at Noon in Exploratory Hall Room 3301.
VSE's speaker is Jie Xu, and COS's speaker is Nirmal Jeevi Ghimire.
Dr. Xu's presentation title, abstract and bio are below.
Title: Efficient Stochastic Simulation Optimization Algorithms and Their Applications
Abstract: Stochastic simulation optimization provides a powerful and general tool to optimize the design of complex stochastic systems. However, major difficulties arise when the simulation is time-consuming and the stochastic noise is significant. In this talk, we discuss several efforts that aim to improve the computational efficiency of stochastic simulation optimization algorithms for two large-scale applications. We present an application in air traffic management and an application in power grids weather resilience to demonstrate the broader impact of scalable stochastic simulation optimization.
Bio: Dr. Jie Xu is an Associate Professor of Systems Engineering & Operations Research at George Mason University, Fairfax, VA, USA. He received his Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, USA, in 2009. His research interests are the modeling, simulation, and optimization of complex stochastic systems, with applications in applications in artificial intelligence, air transportation, cloud computing, and power systems. His work has been sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Jeffress Trust of Interdisciplinary Research, Oak Ridge Associated Universities, and Office of Naval Research.
