For those of you I haven't yet had the pleasure of meeting (mostly because I've been on research leave) my name is Mike Hunzeker and I'm an assistant professor here at the Schar School.


I wanted to let you know about two exciting, important and timely extracurricular events sponsored by the Center for Security Policy Studies (CSPS).


First, CSPS is pleased to host Mason's very own Professor Shaul Bakhash as he reflects on  the 40th anniversary of the Iranian Revolution. Professor Bakhash's talk is at 5:00 pm on Friday, February 22nd in Founders Hall Room 111. Second, CSPS is holding its Spring Crisis Simulation on Saturday, March 2nd from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm in Founders Hall.

I know, I know: 9:00 am on a Saturday sounds painful. But trust me - the proverbial juice is worth the literal squeeze. Our 'game' revolves around a fictional (but realistic) crisis in the East China Sea. It puts you in the drivers seat and challenges you to make and execute strategy under the most challenging conditions imaginable. No, not combat. Bureaucracy. You think you've mastered Schelling and Clausewitz in the classroom? Cool beans. Now you can try your hand at putting their theories into practice. So come spend a few hours to do battle with your adversaries, your allies and your own government.

I've been running this game since 2011. I've had career diplomats, jaded politicos and hard nosed military officers tell me this sim comes as close to the real thing as you can get. I've seen best friends shouting at one another in the hallway. So trust me (even if you don't know me)... it is worth your time. You didn't come to grad school to talk about strategy. You came to grad school to learn how to practice strategy. This is your chance.
