Abstract

National Science Foundation supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. This presentation will provide a brief history and organization of National Science Foundation with a specific emphasis on engineering research.  Features of the core programs as well as new initiatives will be discussed.  Following that the presentation will focus on research on the next generation of power systems that addresses rise of distributed generation (DG) and microgrids, increased penetration of wind and solar, changing consumer expectations, cybersecurity, resiliency in response to natural and man-made disasters, leveraging massive data for real-time decisions, and integration of power electronics for power system operations.


Bio

Dr. Anil Pahwa is a Program Director at the National Science Foundation and he is University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Kansas State University.  His areas of expertise include power distribution system analysis and design, intelligent computational methods for power systems, optimization methods, and off-grid power systems.  He has published over 200 research articles and served as an editor of the IEEE Transactions on Power Systems from 2010 to 2015.  Dr. Pahwa received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Texas A& M University in 1983.  He is a fellow of IEEE.
