SPOTLIGHT: Bryce Dunn, MS Student at Mason Bioengineering -

[cid:image009.jpg@01D7B52B.E67D46F0]The global COVID-19 pandemic has provided ongoing challenges for everyone. In the spring of this year, my dream internship pulled plans to host its annual summer research program due to health concerns. I knew I needed to make the most of my summer while facing uncertainty about the coronavirus and the availability of the vaccine.

I reached out to my Bioengineering department faculty for opportunities in biomedical research. Professor Qi Wei provided me with a fantastic opportunity to study CT image analysis in lung cancer precision medicine. I deployed a deep learning model for automated tumor segmentation and extracted image features that can be used to diagnose lung cancer subtypes. I will go on to present my research at the annual Commonwealth of Virginia Cancer Research Conference hosted by VCU this November.

Additionally, I participated in the Virtual Internship in Biomedical Engineering (VIBE) hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute. VIBE is an engineering design competition where students from across the world gain professional development skills while learning more about biomedical engineering. Our team of BME students from across the country researched a concept for a rapid, at-home malaria test. My team produced a YouTube video discussion of our design that has been viewed hundreds of times since August. Needless to say, it was a productive summer!
