Teaching Seminar (undergrad students)
Date: Thursday, February 4
Time: 3:00-4:00 pm
Topic: Key Concepts in Applied Machine Learning.
This seminar introduces bioengineering students to fundamental issues in machine learning and their application to problems in engineering. No prior knowledge is assumed, other than a declared interest in bioengineering. These concepts will be presented in a way that introduces beginners to new ideas, while still challenging experienced students to consider those ideas in a new light. After the seminar, students will be able to define machine learning, contrast it with other approaches in data analysis, and explain its strengths and limitations. Examples will be used to illustrate concepts like model selection, and specific techniques like regression and cross-validation. Applications to neuroscience and biomedical brain imaging will be used to motivate students to pursue further study in machine learning.
