What you might consider -- if you exported the records and ran the dedup tool -- ask for unique records. This will only provide records without a duplicate. So, if there is a duplicate, those records would be excluded.

Subject: Re: [MARCEDIT-L] Checking for duplicate titles

Hi,
	I found that...after exploring a bit.

The trick is, one collection is on our catalog now.

I can export records from our catalog, but that doesn't remove the records, just creates a marc file of the records.

So, if I combine the two collections, the new and the old, and run the de-dup, it will remove one of the duplicate records, but when I then import the file in, duplicate records would still exist in the catalog.

I think with de-dup the best I can do is save the duplicates into a file, and then remove the duplicates from the catalog.

It's summer, so my logic fails me at present...

Thanks for the response,

Michael

(first, combine the files into 1 file with all of the records and break it into a .mrk file).

Looking in the MARC Editor's Tools menu, I see a command, Record deduplication. Selecting that, I would choose Main Title, which appears to allow you to enter a tag number if different from 245 (I'm not sure if it would work, but if you have URLs that would be identical in 856s for duplicated titles, perhaps you could try that rather than 245, to avoid problems with identical titles for completely different works). Dedup on "None", Remove Duplicate Items, and check "Save Dedup items to:", to store the possible duplicates in case you want to look at them later (to verify it worked as desired). Once you Process, it appears the duplicate records are removed from your open .mrk file (after which you could save it/compile it however you wished).

I hope this helps,
