The other option -- MarcEdit does support communicating via a proxy. You have two options (and honestly, it's not guaranteed that z39.50 will always work, because, to a large degree, z39.50 acts like a proxy layer):
1) Use a pac script (not that common any more)
2) Allow MarcEdit to utilize your system proxy settings

In windows, the tool takes default proxy info that has been configured in your internet settings. Assuming the proxy allows communication with the servers (and the sun and moon align) -- that might allow you to proxy out.

As an fyi -- you may also want to let your IT Folks know that you may have other ports that need opened. Z39.50 doesn't standardize on a specific port. Often, its 210, but I see 5000, 9901, etc. SRU is easier since it's over port 80 -- in fact, if you can use SRU (in your environment) -- that might be a better option. LOC for example supports SRU.

I suggest telling them the Library of Congress supports it

Found out that our IT folks are blocking port 210. I now need a justification to open the port. Anyone have any tips on how to let non-library IT folks know Z39.50 access won't break everything?

So the only Z39.50 server I can access through MARCEdit is our local one. I get a "Querying Database" and then the "fall back" message and then nothing on all others I try. I'm guessing this is due to our firewall. Before I go to our IT folks, I'm wondering if MARCEdit has a log I could check to see what errors are coming back to provide them with further info.

Thanks!
