I have occasionally lost records (regardless of the size of the file) by
accidental keypresses in the MARC Editor. If the cursor is not actually
focused where I think it is, I can manage to add a stray character in
the LDR, which will make that record invalid and MarcEdit can no longer
"see" it - the symptom being that the total record count loses one from
what I thought it should be. When I'm doing something that involves a
lot of search and replacing or other frequent edits, I use Tools >
Validate MARC Records > Validate Record Structure and save regularly to
a different .mrk file than I started with (just in case I need to go
back). If there is a fatal problem in the LDR MarcEdit will tell you,
but you'll need to use some other text editor like Notepad++ to fix it,
since MarcEdit itself won't be able to display the record (even by
searching for other data that you know should bring it up).
