Thanks Terry!

In the back of my mind I knew those MARC limits existed but I never thought about how exceeding them would throw off processing in the real world. Makes sense now.

Joe

MarcEdit has no such limits -- MARC does. You are allowed 99,999 bytes total size. Within the directory, you can have up to 9999 bytes per field. Practically, this means that a valid will start going over those limits when fields move into the thousands, but could happen much sooner depending on field size. These are hard format limits related to MARC.

Subject: [MARCEDIT-L] Maximum Number of Fields per Record for MarcMaker to work?

Hi,

Is there an official maximum number of fields per record in .mrk8 format beyond which a file containing that record cannot be reassembled into binary? I'm cross-walking tab-delimited data into .mrk8 for a series of catalog migrations and item level data will be represented in and mapped from 857 fields, with each bib record containing as many 857s as there are items associated with the bib record. Some journal records have a few hundred to a couple thousand items/857 fields. When this is the case, I get an error message and the MarcMaker process fails. I've encountered this before, but as I may need to resolve it on multiple occasions, I'm going to develop some process for isolating those that will be too large.

Thanks!
