Confessional moment here, several years ago I needed to move a piece of data in all of our legacy records after we migrated systems. I missed a crucial step in one file that resulted in a 5000 record "oops" of losing the LCCNs. This file has been my bĂȘte noir ever since. I had managed to manually restore LCCNs to about a thousand records in the intervening years but it was mostly an ongoing source of frustration.

I was fortunate to attend the recent MarcEdit preconference in D.C., hosted by the Potomac Technical Processing Librarians group, and at which Terry himself presented. I learned a lot that day, including the existence and functioning of the Merge Records routine in MarcEdit.

It took several hours yesterday to work out some kinks due to some other issues with the form of the OCLC record number as formatted from our ILS and as formatted from OCLC. Today though, I was able to restore the LCCNs to the remaining records and close out the project. Doubtless, I had to take more manual steps to massage some of the record files than others with more experience might, but all of the heavy lifting was done by MarcEdit.

Thanks Terry for developing such an amazing suite of software tools!
