I had this same problem when editing a file of just over 500 records and it happened several times with the same file. Each time I just closed the file without saving it and started over again.

This was last month so I think this is close to what I was doing. I clicked on load entire file and the file loaded as 6 pages. When I edited a record on the 6th page, the file lost 100 records or one page. I was using replace to change '=856 40' to '=949 \1' so I could load the 856 fields into item records. A few of the records had multiple 856 fields so I was editing the extra ones manually to be 999 fields just so I wouldn't have extra 949 fields in some records. The manually edited records were on page 1 and page 6.

I get confused as to whether or not I need to click on load entire file. I prefer a single file of records instead of pages.

Margaret: I had this problem, or thought I had. When I notice a drop in the field count--and in a big file I check after every edit--I immediately close the file without saving changes. When I go back all the records are there and I can re-edit without any problem. But why does the field count drop in the first place?

Subject: loss of records

I keep losing records. I will make a number of edits to a file, and all goes well. Then all of a sudden I lose most of the file. I admit I'm working with a largish file (10,000 bibs) but I don't understand why I can make changes without a problem if size were the issue.

I think someone else on this list had this problem but I can't remember what they thought was causing it.
