Sorry -- this is one place where the help file isn't correct.  In 4.x, this was true.  In 5.x, I made is so that a new file is always generated.  The reason for this was it was confusing for people in 4.x.  I've been trying to think of a way to re-introduce this back into MarcEdit, but do so in a way that isn't confusing.
