Every now and again, I start editing a file that validates, only to
find the file mysteriously truncating. For example, the attached file
has 255 records. If I do a Delete Field and delete the field:
099, it reports that 255 fields were deleted, and there are still 3
pages of records indicated. However, if I then save the file, the
file instantly reports that there are only 2 pages of records and
there will now be only 200 records if I do a field count or perform
any add/delete of a field.
I don't know what's causing it. I found that if I did no editing but
compiled the file into MARC format, and then opened the resulting MRC
file, there would be 255 records, but the first record in the batch
would no longer validate and the field numbers were mustly messed up
(but only in that first record). I edited the MRK file in a text
editor to fix the field numbers, and then the file stayed as 255
records without any problems.
This is the third or fourth file I've worked with that did this
mysterious thing of truncating down to the next nearest 100 records.
One of the files that did this would do it multiple times, going from
over 400 records down to 400, then down to 300.
Example attached. (If it's too large and gets screened out by the
listserv, I can resend it privately.)
Thanks!
