In a situation where I open a MRC file with MarcEdit, convert it to
MRK and then want to edit it in a text editor, what should be done
when adding text that includes diacritics?

I have been adding fields to some records in batches using a text
editor. These new fields often include characters with diacritics.

I've been saving the file in UTF-8 and including the diacritics in
that character set (not using curly brackets). Mostly that works.
Sometimes there have been problems.

I tried adding and editing fields within MarcEdit, but changes were
not always saved and I couldn't work around that, so I save MarcEdit
mostly for adding/deleting of fields and subfields for the entire
batch.

If I am using a text editor to add fields to mnemonic MRK files,
what's the best way to treat text added with diacritics? If I have to
change the diacritics individually to mnemonic format, that's going to
be very time consuming. If MarcEdit has trouble with files that have
UTF-8 or a mix of mnemonic (curly bracket) diacritics and UTF-8, is
there a utility or program that will convert the file to a uniform
state of either all mnemonic or all UTF-8?

Also, when I save a MRK file in UTF-8 file, I'm given the choice of
"Add a Unicode signature (BOM)" . Is that necessary or desirable?
