I changed all the 856 fields I want to keep into 956 tags. I want to delete the remaining 856 tags, restore 956 to 856, and then see if there are any records in the file that do not have an 856 tag.

1. Convert your desired 856 to 956.

2. Delete the remaining 856.

3. Convert the 956 to 856.

4. Use Add/Delete field (with checkbox Add field only if not present) to add 856 with text: \\$aRECORD LACKS 856
[or wording that is unique and identifies the records lacking 856]

5. Find the records now containing the field added in step 4 and deal with them in your desired manner.

I hope this helps,
