We are currently a DDC library and our library catalog contains myriads of records that had the LC call numbers stripped from our records. We would like to embark upon a project whereby we reinsert these call numbers back into the files.
We currently do not use OCLC's WorldShare Metadata Collection Manager, though plans are being made to begin such in the future. We have also added a great deal of local enhancement to our records, which may or may not have been updated to the OCLC master record (which creates some concern as we look to the future rollout of the bibliographic update service).
So, I've laid out a process whereby we can identify and download OCLC records by number, as well as those in our catalog without an 050 or 090. The goal is to merge two files using a matchpoint. The difficulty is that sometimes the matchpoint will be the 035, but if OCLC has merged records since our acquiring and cataloging a resource, the matchpoint would be an 035 in our local record and an 019 in the OCLC record.
I've got the 035 to 035 process down, but any suggestions on how to account for the matchpoint residing in different fields?
Is the solution to copy the 019 to multiple 035s? If so, how can a single 019 be split into multiple 035s? Also, during the merge process MARCEdit can handle repeating fields, but it wants to know which field is to be the matchpoint.
Any recommendations would be welcome.
