Thanks Bryan and Greg. Terry Reese contacted me directly (as well as posting to the list, but I haven't seen his post yet): the glitch is indeed due to that pair of end of record markers at the end of the first record (which I couldn't see, or maybe identify, with Notepad). Terry deleted the duplicate marker, corrected the number of characters in the record, and sent a corrected file.
Chagrined I couldn't troubleshoot this myself; thanks to everyone who puzzled over it.
Jeff

Try converting the file from utf8 to marc8 before opening it.

Subject: Chinamaxx MARC records--can't open or break with MarcEdit
All,
Recently I've been experiencing glitches trying to open or break *some* .mrc files. For the specific file in question (attached--40 records for Chinese ebooks) I get error messages when I use MarcBreaker and MarcValidator, as well as when I try to open the .mrc file directly in the MarcEditor. (Currently using MarcEdit version 5.9.4880.40351)
When I open the file in Notepad, I get what looks more or less like unformatted raw MARC, e.g.:

Can anyone (perhaps someone with more experience than I with Chinese character sets) open this file and or convert it to .mrk format? Are there errors in the data that are causing the glitch or is there something I'm missing with regard to opening/viewing the file?
Thanks,
Jeff
