Hi Jeff,

Our institution hasn't made a concrete move away from a MARC-centric bibliographic environment yet, but we're doing what we can in the interim, until our ILS vendor can get there. We're partnering with Zepheira LLC to send them our MARC catalog data in MARC21XML format, which they're converting to BIBFRAME/Linked Data and placing on their servers for search engine bots to crawl and index.

I'm using MarcEdit's ability to convert MARC files to MARC21XML files before sending them to Zepheira, because our ILS vendor (Innovative Interfaces) cannot export MARC records in MARC21XML format. They're planning to write an API in order to do that, but the announcement to that effect was made in March of this year. I don't know when that API will be available, nor if it will be free or for a fee (they do charge for some of their APIs).

I although I don't use the MARCNext Tools in MarcEdit for the partnership with Zepheira, I know for sure we couldn't participate in Linked Data without MarcEdit.

Thank you,

Andrea Kappler

Subject: [MARCEDIT-L] Linked Open Data

All,

I'd be curious to hear from MarcEdit users about whether their institutions have made any concrete moves away from a MARC-centric bibliographic environment toward a Linked Open Data environment. I'm aware of what UC Davis is doing with BIBFLOW and some of what's going on at Stanford as well as efforts by Europeana.

Having read a bunch, watched presentations, etc., I get the sense that meaningful "adoption" (whatever that means) of Linked Open Data as a replacement for MARC-centric bibliographic and holdings metadata is YEARS away, at least outside the realm of relatively small, relatively distinct realms (e.g. Linked Jazz and or Civil War Data 150).

The MARCNext tools Terry has provided in MarcEdit are fun to play around with. Has anyone used them in a production environment?

Thanks very much,

Jeff
