As for the discrepancy, I think the report may list each incident of a heading being found, not unique headings, so possibly a name or SH was appearing in multiple records and getting counted each time.

Stacy Wolf (of University of North Texas Libraries, the last I time we corresponded) developed a procedure for extracting the LCCN's from these reports for batch download in Connexion, as a possible alternative process. Her procedure took advantage of some of the functions in Excel, but I've tried just taking the text of the Validate Headings report in Notepad++ and using regex to find/replace everything preceding the LC authority lines etc., which was better suited to my limited skill set. :) Save the LCCNs and use those to do a batch search in Connexion.

Subject: [MARCEDIT-L] Validate Headings - Download LC Authorities

Greetings Collective Wisdom,

I've been trying out the Validate Headings function and consistently notice a big discrepancy between how many LC authorities will download versus how many valid headings are in my file of bibs. For example, in a file I just tested, MarcEdit downloaded 15 LC authorities, but the report states that 21 1xx, 67 6xx, and 15 7xx headings are found. I'm wondering why 103 authorities aren't downloaded. As a workaround, I use "Embed URIs when possible" and extract the LCCNs. After de-duping, I found 82 unique authorities that I batch downloaded through Connexion. I'm also wondering about the difference of 103 versus 82. Any insight is much appreciated!

Thank you,
Mariko Kershaw
