I think there's a misunderstanding here caused by differing vocabulary.
I believe that what Mr. Pilcher wants to do is remove what we Americans
call the "period" at the end of each line (which I believe is called
"full stop" in British English). He was searching for the carriage
return as a way to find the final period/full stop, but I don't think
the carriage return is what he wants to delete.

I suspect a regular expression would be the answer, but I haven't delved
into them yet myself...

There shouldn't be any way that can happen if you are using the compiled
MARC file.  You can send a sample file to me privately if you like.
