Without seeing the records, the Merge tool is going to work best if you have a control number to match on (when working with a full record and brief record) or using the MARC21 matching option (when the two records are full records). Without seeing the records it's hard to say what you are seeing -- but if your data has control numbers -- I'd use those as the match points and that should ensure a good merge. In terms of the record order -- that doesn't matter with the tool -- marcedit reads both files and creates large indexes of each before attempting to match and merge data.

Subject: [MARCEDIT-L] EBSCO 856 issues.

Good morning,

I am having difficulties performing what appears to be a simple task. I am using MarcEdit version 5.6.4292... build date 10/2/2011 I believe this this latest version.

I have 2 sets of records one anemic one provided by EBSCO, the only valuable part of the record to me is the 856 field

I also have my record set that includes supplemental information and formatting.

My goal is to have a set records with my information / formatting and the correct 856 field. At this point it doesn't matter how the goal is achieved.

The record set is approximately 219 records if that matters.

I have tried using the merge function with strange results e.g. 2 different titles for a given record. My theory is that two record sets are not in the same order. I am not sure if this matters.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
