Hi all,
Heidi was right;
Our computers here got upgraded to the latest Windows, and it seems that version prevents you from changing file extensions by default; you have to change a setting to allow file extensions to be changed.
Thanks, Heidi for your help.
Michael

Subject: Re: Problematic file
Hi Michael,
This sounds like a problem I've had in the past. I had instructions to just change the ".bin" to ".mrc" but that still wasn't doing it because it was just modifying the file name, not the file type. So on my workstation, I had to change a permissions setting that allowed me to change the file type when viewing my files via Windows Explorer (though someone had helped me figure out where that was and I can't remember the steps - I think somewhere in the Control Panel...?)
anyway, hope this helps to troubleshoot.

Hi all,
I have a set of MARC records from OCLC; when I download the file, it is in .bin format;
I try to open the file in MARC-Edit, compile it into .mrc; however, when I try to open the file as a .mrc file in MARC-Edit, I get an error message "Please make certain this file is valid MARC".
I tried opening it on a different computer, same problem.
Is this likely happening because the file is corrupt? I can get the data to load as a .bin.
Thanks so much for your help,
