If I recall correctly I have received that -11 error when I have tried to merge different file types, mrc with mrk.

Subject: Re: [MARCEDIT-L] 856 field & Merge Files tool

Terry and Janet,

Thank you for your responses.

The records in my two files do not have any of the common match points in the picklist for Record Identifier (001, 010, 020, 035), so I selected MARC21 for the Record Identifier. I then checked the Customize Fields box and then unselected all fields except the 245$a and 245$b as these are the only match points. Next, I selected the 856 Field as the Merge Field. Next, I tried all the variations of selecting/not selecting "Overlay Existing Items" and "Merge Unique Items." In all attempts, I left the Confidence Value: at 0.70. Again, when I clicked "Execute" on the save file, I got a message at the bottom of the box Results: -11 records were processed in 0.000982 seconds."

Maybe more specifics would shed better light on this problem....the MARC records in the source file are for print Montana state government publications that the Internet Archive has scanned at http://secure-web.cisco.com/1wn2Wp2z2O_M0OcGDLmsL5VVmEbHJQA_sFYuIzPBIKr25gUWJg6b9YPBT_fv4NKSSdZew1WS9W8qWoqi4xR7feTh2F4BZeSGtNW2zAf5felfMSUbSl12bBa_vgQCmIQhloXQkEqYRrChqeddo4ZrzB5Ru28IysPFVa721kJacwdlJ_RP4NSh6njZntzwFXyIng4PtLOkGSzbbJwfUH22mdcEY5jRvEpPJTBEEIBUxbmMAIz7XXMp5NkiHVOpJTpg0olgA8AosayJ1AaBZbpTO3aeNmN_7Fgb_DKVVGiBl-potDDEaFXVNSp__KWFrRouMuNx1_-AB9nHlMbSgzi7LsajNYmWgPlkGY99SC7CqRHy1PDNj_vDYZxoY9CooeHNRf_dVQOqlqKBXD0A3SvgCNGTXeWNJk8tyOrFJXSVwTTI0Tr3BYu8QoYjxv1FAFgMYI6ZB7MGWhgV9OaAG9fpyMw/http%3A%2F%2Farchive.org%2Fdetails%2FMontanaStateLibrary . The MARC records in the merge file are system-generated for the scanned (digital) state publications and have a new and different 035, and again no match points on the 001, 010 and 020.

Again, maybe I am not using the Merge Records tool correctly or possibly using the wrong tool in my quest to merge the 856 fields from the merge file into the source file.

Thanks for your assistance.

Hi Jim,

Is this what you are trying to do? Merge two files that contain the same records but different customized URLs so that the save file records have both URLs. In this case you want to select the record identifier that's the matchpoint in both files such 020 for ISBN or 001 for control number.
I've never used MARC21 as the identifier, from the documentation it looks like you have to select customized fields to act as matchpoints. I

You should only use the MARC21 option when records don't have match points.
And if that's the case, then you will need to play with the match value - that determine what confidence level you are comfortable with.

Ideally, you wan to have match points.

Subject: [MARCEDIT-L] 856 field & Merge Files tool

In preparation for a much larger project, I created three test files to learn how to use the MarcEdit "Merge Files" tool, i.e., a source, merge, and save file. Having never used the Merge File tool before, I hope I am using it as intended.

I want to merge the 856 fields in the merge.mrc file into the source.mrc file and save the results in the save.mrc file.

I followed the Merging MARC Data Sets instructions at https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://secure-web.cisco.com/1Y7Rok4pLFvqCVQFB-qiJyZoLEx5R-JwKcsTsbC8TWpJIlIXJu41ezCGyKFgLbtE0AIxTOOuhyIXaZlDe5Zt5CH2gNqhYHTfzsotuhUCy-F1RyedwXGFxiGNSEluLIRt4zz7cjEiHIfUfPQhfzduYlBegkdcFN_-0t2Lj98GIdqArvDul357oP1DjLKLfKgY_0-1dY1fMyHOp_3aVz6sDDuQbpgqLDV3CRHyEwDxXc0kY5OuHWOj1nnhF-s4PRCjbdNlkegl0wZsF8OVtq1diUeMel0lNj8EbQhIeAuJVXWT2pClrGenTkU087420f-zpXfLv-x3kbvS8P0y27SUurPLgXTR6cDSoV8nedVRh3BYMcZfuX-nMFddrwX2C2kx5GjbFWImv-uqfmwhYbVqkOxfysPHVET8zauNpPvJSEszDtvqpRD9wUHpjTUnmyEYlQ2CWE1fH7i2SIy26ora0CQ/https*3A*2F*2Fmarcedit.reeset.net*2Flearning_marcedit*2F9-2*2Fchapter-4-merging-marc-dat__;JSUlJSUl!!GaaboA!9i5S_87gOnVypbuMHqylVZWW0jA79-wbKMXT0ROZlsfXSlVF1ML0HoPwP60JrOMD$
a-sets/view-all/

*	I selected "MARC 21" for the record identifier and left unchecked
the "Customize fields" box and then clicked Next.
*	In the "Merge Record Data: Select Fields" screen, I added just the
856 field to the Merge Fields box, and then clicked Next.
*	Next screen says "Merge Completed" Files have been merged. Results
located in C:\Users\cw2011\Desktop\save.mrc. So, I click the "Close" button.
*	Next I open up the save.mrc file and I select MarcBreaker and
clicked "Execute."
*	The Results text at bottom of screen says: "-11 records were
processed in 0.00000 seconds." The Edit Records button remained greyed out and there were no files in the save.mrc file.

Any ideas about what I need to do differently in order to add the 856 field in the merge file records into the source file records?

Thank you in advance.
