Terry,

I think this is a helpful enhancement (to an already fantastic product--don't know what libraries would do without MARCEdit!!).

I was thinking that one way I could help with demonstrating diacritics support may be to added a type of intellisense to MarcEdit. That way, when you typed a { marcedit would automatically display the available diacritic mnemonics. It would look something like the image below – but before I added this support (and a way to turn it off for folks that didn’t want it) – I’d like to know if this would help those that hand type the diacritic elements.

That would be great. I find mnemonics very helpful, and the better the match between MarcEdit and whatever may come in from the myriad of MARC sources we use, the faster we get a readable catalog record in front of the users.

Thanks for your continuing work on this package!

Ok – I took a closer look at this and realized what’s up. MarcEdit doesn’t support all the mnemonics that LC uses – and this is one of them. The reason is that MarcEdit maps 0x176 to mllhring and the lc map maps multiple bytes to different mnemonic codes, though for all intents and purposes, they map to the same value. When I first created marcedit, the mnemonic list between LC and MarcEdit were identical. It appears LC has updated the list so to provide a larger set of mnemonic tags – which as I’ve said – not all have been added for support. If folks would find value in syncing these lists again, I could do that. But that explains why you are seeing what you are seeing.

I have a record which, when viewed as a .mrk in MarcEdit or a text editor shows {ayn} in places. When it is converted to .mrc, it does not seem to be converting the {ayn} to a symbol. When I break the newly made .mrc file,
in place of:
{ayn}
it now shows me:
{lcub}ayn{rcub}
The other diacritic marks seem to be converting correctly, but ayn is not.

I'll probably switch all the {ayn} marks to {mllhring} since it produces the same character, but is there any reason why {ayn} isn't working for me? It's listed as a supported string in: http://www.loc.gov/marc/mnemonics.html
