Grace,

If you are using OCLC Connexion, you should be able to export the bibs in MARC-8. At the top menu bar, choose Tools --> Options --> "Export" tab --> "Record characteristics" button --> "Character set" under Bibliographic Records on the left --> choose "MARC-8" from the dropdown

Lucas

That would be my guess. I would be easy to check - MARC data is a mixture of plaintext/binary data. It's easy to read in notepad++ if you know how to skip through the directory, etc. But my guess would be that this data is being changed on export because there currently is no process in MarcEdit that would touch field data outside of the LDR if the program was being asked to convert character encoding (and that is ensuring byte 9 is set correctly).

Terry:
So, I'm not tech saavy. Please bear with me: what you are saying is that 'exporting' the OCLC record by setting the character coding scheme to UTF8 is making OCLC change the 005 before it gets to MarcEdit. MarcEdit is not doing this.

Ok. This is good to know. I'll let our IT person have this information so we move forward from here.

Many thanks for your time,
Grace

If you look at the data being output from OCLC -- I would bet the data is being changed on the UTF8 exported record. Again, MarcEdit doesn't change this field because the 005 has no meaning in the application. It doesn't know that it should be a date. It's just data.

Hi Terry:
I just did a test record changing the load character coding scheme to UTF8 in OCLC to export the record into MarcEdit.
When I open up the MarcEditor-- the 005 is showing today's date information.
When I then load the record into Horizon on MARC8 setting, the 005 displays the original OCLC 005 information.

Is this the information you are asking for?

Regards,
Grace

MarcEdit won't change any field that it isn't asked to. There is no logic in the program that changes field data because its marc agnostic (the 005 field has a different meaning in different marc flavors).

Hi Grace,

Is the issue present in the 005 before the import into Horizon or after?

I want to understand if this is a MarcEdit issue or Horizon. If the issue is visible before the upload then it is in MarcEdit, if after then it is Horizon.

Subject: [MARCEDIT-L] MarcEdit impact on 005 field

Hello:
My library is currently having many issues with diacritics displaying incorrectly in BiblioCommons.
We are currently using Horizon 7.5.5.
Because of Horizon's inability to support UTF8-- we must export OCLC records using UTF8 and then run the records through MarcEdit and import into Horizon using MARC8.
It's a cumbersome process.
We thought this was addressing the problem but we are still seeing incorrect diacritics in BiblioCommons.

Our IT person screen captured the 005 in MarcEdit for several of the records run through MarcEdit: the 005 seems to update/change; however, when the record is finally loaded into Horizon, the 005 'reverts' back to the original 005 from the OCLC record.

My question to you: can you explain why the 005 changes in the MarcEdit process? Because this 'change' is really hidden down the line so to speak, could it have any implications for how they 'system' is reading the record?

Thank you very much for your time,

Grace Rempel
