Thanks everyone for your responses.  I have tried all the changes suggested and nothing makes a difference.  Since a couple of you could compile the record, Terry's explanation makes the most sense.  I did reinstall MARCEdit and still can't get the file into .mrc, but I think it may have to do with my not being able to run programs from my C-drive; IT has to install it in some cryptic part of my computer.  I don't understand it exactly, but it is the only solution that makes sense at this point.

leader has 28 not 24 characters and ending 450 instead of 4500; very
weird values too but I don't know how MarcEdit handles the leader,
it's not part of the validation requirements as far as I remember.
