You can have a task that prompts you for user data -- so when you run the task -- it would ask you for the input to put into that field. The way this is defined is noted here: http://blog.reeset.net/archives/1807
I'm not positive this is implemented in the build new fields pattern tooling -- try it - and if it doesn't work, let me know and I'll add it.

hello. I'm new to the list.
I am using the Task Manager. I need to add a 910 field that includes the date the record is uploaded into our catalog.
I created a "build field" item to the task list replacing an existing 910 field which contains the file name:
=910 \\$afilename: {910$a}$bDate loaded: {}
Is adding a date variable possible?
