I wan't to understand the use of the escape codes.

I have the following examples from my Ebrary Marc records:
Gonz{esc}g"{esc}salez
Origami{esc}p3{esc}
Schlo{esc}(Sb{esc}(B

I understand what the codes do - but a want to understand what the 
letters between the escape codes means.
