Sure – when I work on updating next – I’ll work on an addition so that the tool remembers last run items when run from outside of a task.

Hi Terry,

I can certainly understand the complexity of generating a value for the form of a work. Just looking at the examples given in the RDA Toolkit shows a wide variety of possibilities for the text.

Would it be difficult to set up the RDA Helper so we could uncheck the generate 380 and save that setting as our default? Or would it be better to set up a task, which would save that local preference?

Thanks!

Hi Tim,

The output of the 380 has long been the most difficult to predict because the data used to generate this field doesn't come from any specific controlled vocabulary. This is a free text field that is the epitome of cataloger's judgement -- so to make it work from a practical purpose, I've imposed a set of vocabulary using one of LC's lists. Matching that list to the coding found within MARC records causes these types of assignments. To be clear, the 008 is one element used to determine what value to select when creating the 380, but it's by far the only one. Rather, there are the potential of 8 different points utilized to determine which element to pull from this listing -- however, as I've said, the fact that this field is a free text field essentially means that this generated value will nearly always be different than what a cataloger might (probably) would select. In doing my own assessment of records generated by the RDA Helper versus hand coded by catalogers -- this field is nearly always the one element where there will be disagreement. I can certainly look at adding or weighting some points over another -- but this will always be a generated field that will likely have a level of disagreement between what can be automatically generated versus hand cataloged.

Hi,

I noticed that the RDA Helper adds the 380 field (Form of Work) as “Bibliography” if the 008/24-27 (Nature of Contents) is coded “b”. I was wondering if another criteria could be used by the RDA Helper to add the “380 \\$aBibliography<file:///\\$aBibliography>.”, like the presence of a “6XX$vBibliograpy”?

Common usage of the 008/24-27 “b” is for works that include bibliographic references, but aren’t necessarily a bibliography in the sense of the entire work. So, more often than not, the RDA Helper would be incorrectly adding the 380 field.

If a change like that isn’t easily made, would it be possible to allow us to uncheck the “Add 380” and safe that as a default? That would mean we wouldn’t have to uncheck that box every time we use the RDA Helper, outside of a task.

Thanks, as always!
