I've been processing batches of ebook records with MARCedit. These are
supplied by the publishers in most cases and are of varying quality.
When I use MARCValidator, I'm looking primarily for serious errors.
But with most, if not all, of these record sets, the validator
reports some errors that I would like to ignore, since they do not
seem to affect the way the records are displayed in our catalog.
The reason the "ignorable" error reports are a problem is that there
are so many of them and I have trouble finding the serious errors in
the records.
An example of type of error reports I would like to suppress is:
"020-Invalid data found in field: 0521779421 (pbk.). Only [^0-9x] is
valid within this field."
This error is in virtually every ebook MARC record I have processed so far..
Another one that is in virtually every record set is:
"007: Length appears to be invalid. Reported length is: 14.
Expected length: 8"
Can I just edit the marcrules.txt file as outlined below?
I was thinking of doing this:
Under:
020 R INTERNATIONAL STANDARD BOOK NUMBER
Remove the lines:
valida [^0-9x] Valid Characters
validz [^0-9x] Valid Characters
Under:
007 R PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION FIXED FIELD--GENERAL INFORMATION
remove the line:
length 8
Would this be a reasonable plan?
