Subject: editing only the second instance of 856 in a record?
Hello all,
I'm new to MarcEdit and trying to figure out how I can use it to edit the second instance of an 856 field in a batch of vendor records. I need to change the second indicator and add an additional subfield.
Here's what I have in each record:
856 40 |3[vendor name]|u[resource URL]
856 40 |u[cover image URL]
And here's what I want:
856 40 |3[vendor name]|u[resource URL]
856 42 |zCover Image|u[cover image URL]
I know how to add the subfield once the indicator is changed, but I can't do it until I figure out how to edit just the second instance of the field. Based on what I've learned so far about MarcEdit's capabilities, I suspect there might even be a way to do both at once. Suggestions welcome!
All the best,
Deb

Tom has the right idea, assuming all cover image 856s begin with $u, and all resource 856s begin with some other subfield.
You’ll need to include “$u” at the end of the replace string though:
Find: =856 40$u
Replace: =856 42$zCover image$u
