Thanks, that's excellent -- I hadn't used the right search terms to find that in the documentation/worklog.

You can add the {current_filename} mnemonic to the add field function and
wrap it in a task if you want. It will include the extension. If you
don't want that, you'll need to target the field and clean that value.

I would like to automate building a new 910 field that inserts the name of the MARC file (without the suffix .mrk) in each MARC record.

For example, I have batch files from EBSCOhost to process, named 'ebz-ohiolinka-20231116-Chg', and 'ebz-ohiolinka-20231116-Add'. Along with the other automated edits in my EBSCOhost Task, I want to create a field:
910 \\$aebz-ohiolinka-20231116-Chg <file://$aebz-ohiolinka-20231116-Chg>
for records in the file ebz-ohiolinka-20231116-Chg.mrk; 910\\$aebz-ohiolinka-20231116-Add for the records in the -Add.mrk file, and so on.

That way, I can track edits to a MARC record in my database by the batch file names in each of its 910 fields.

Is that something MARCedit can do currently?

Kind Regards,

Subject: INQUIRY: making MARC changes on an OCLC export file

Good morning everyone (even if it is no longer morning 😊),

This is the first time we started using MARCEDIT to edit MARC records and ran into an issue I think is simple, but my mind seems to be ready for the holiday.

We are fixing MARC records we receive from Baker & Taylor, Cengage, Ingram, as well as OCLC Record Manager (the export.dat file). The easiest to work on are the BTB records (they open in an easy to read format). However, all others open in a paragraph format and are hard to manipulate. What have others done?

Thank you,

When you say paragraph form, I'm guessing you are just opening files into the marceditor. If the file isn't a .mrc or mark extension, the program won't recognize the data as marc. The best practice would be to either rename extensions to mrc when you know they are marc or process files through the marc breaker...at that point, extensions are meaningless.

Hi Angela,

Are you converting the .dat file to .mrk? MARC files can come with all kinds of vendor-specific file name extensions, but if they are legit MARC, you should be able to change the .dat, .mrc, or .[whatever] to .mrc and MarcEdit will “know” to convert it to .mrk in MarcEditor.

I’m not sure what “paragraph format” means, though, so I may be misunderstanding the issue.
