Mark K. Ehlert: Thank you! I have been able to successfully use the regex method (and been able to confirm what I suspected: that I can't chain multiple regex methods together).

FTR, this works:

=949  \\$l{852$h.regex("^E.*$","EVERY")}

BUT on original strings that DO NOT match pattern, the entire original string is placed in the new field. Which I can work around!

My new trouble: what's the right syntax for Build New Field when the originating field is the 008 position 22? These don't seem to work:

008$22
008$22:1
008/22
008|22
