Here's a suggested "better" way: I'm not a cataloger, but I handle all
bulk-additions of ebooks to our catalog. Because I don't have any sort
of reliable idea of which fields are okay to be used as temporary
transfer fields, I've been using *made up* field names to act as
temporary containers. Ie, Copy+Delete keeper data from 856 to xxx (that
would be the actual temporary field name) and then Copy+Delete xxx to
856 when done. Unfortunately, there is a three-character limit to field
names -- but I believe there are nearly forty-two thousand alphanumeric
combinations to work with. Another advantage to using letter-characters
in field names is that the "Validate MARC Records" function is more
likely to flag unorthodox field names should you forget to change any of
them back to their original field names.
BTW, the MarcEditor functions (F7 stuff) do seem to work with
alphanumeric field names, and will convert them back and forth.
