9999 bytes (not characters) per field
99999 bytes (not characters) per record
999 total fields
Due to the directory, leader, and coding -- you actually have ~88,000 bytes per record as the directory at that size, eats a lot of bytes.

I thought 99999 characters per record, and I don't understand what "999 records per field" would mean. Should this have read "99999 characters per record and 9999 characters per field"? (Or strictly, octets, which could be a smaller number of characters in the case of things like Unicode?)
