Thank you for everyone's suggestions. I tested all of them, and the one that seemed to work best with my set of records came from Eva Varga (Manager Collection Services & Systems) at CAVAL, Australia.
> Eva suggested that I do a Find & Replace in Notepad++ using the Search Mode "Extended (\n, \r, \t,..)".
Find: \n=852
Replace: =856
I repeated this for each of the 856 tags I didn't want to keep in the record, and that took care of the blank lines.
> With Tom's suggestion to search for (=830[^\n]*?)\n\r in Notepad++ with Regular expression checked off, I got the error "Find: Can't find the text "(=830[^\n]*?)\n\r"
> With Tim's suggestion to copy and paste the file into Word and do a Find and Replace:
Find: ^p^p=856
Replace: ^p=856
I got the error "Couldn't find what you were looking for"
> With Terry's suggestion to use MarcEdit's delete field utility & set the field to 856:
This would have worked if I'd used it in the first place to remove the 856, but instead I used regular expression & as a novice, I may have left the blank space? Also, all the records in this file contain multiple 856 tags (2 to 4), and I need to delete all but one of the 856t tags. I'm not sure about the effect of using the 'delete field' utility to remove the 856, and whether it would remove ALL of the 856 tags in the record.
Thanks again for the quick responses to my call for help. Very much appreciated!
Shirley
