My guess is that there is an error in the file somewhere. When you added
the field, did you include indicators and subfield markers? If while in the
MarcEditor, you Validate the file -- what does it tell you. The Validator,
when run from within the MarcEditor, comments specifically on errors that
prevent compilation.

Subject: [MARCEDIT-L] Error -980
Hello,
We are trying to edit a file of 4,750 records exported out of our Innovative
system. The only change we are making is to insert a 949 field to create an
item record. This we have done with the add field command.
When we attempt to convert back to marc using the "Compile" command on the
"File" menu, it stops at 481 records. If we use Marc Tools, we get error
-980.
We have looked at records 480-482 to see if we could spot a problem, but we
haven't been able to catch anything.
If we break the file, do nothing, and compile back to marc we have the 4,750
records just fine.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
