I think it's important to save after any big change.  I find that the Save may not work if I do two complicated or big things without saving.  If I don't see a saving popup, I close, save when asked and reopen.  Then things are usually okay.  I do a find =245 after major saves and upon reopening to check that all records are present.  If I am doing a lot of changes, particularly ones that require more work, I may create backup files as I go through my edits so that I don't have to start from scratch. (We are still on Windows XP but will be moving to Windows 7 soon.)
