Chiming in as well - I think this is a great idea. As far as I'm concerned MarcEdit is nothing short of a miracle. Can we all envision trying to clean up vendor provided records without such a tool? Talk about a 'Calgon Take Me Away' moment!
The fact that MarcEdit is free is even more of a godsend!
I look forward to the book - I would love a printed copy - no matter what's available online, I end up printing.

Hi Terry,
Wow! What a great and timely idea. I am especially interested in chapters 5 - 9. I hope you will provide multiple examples and scenarios.

Hi folks,
Before I got too far down the rabbit hole, I want to check in on an idea I've been starting to work on. Over the past two years, I've occasionally done a few MarcEdit workshops, and one of the reoccurring requests that I get from people - is a request to write a how to; something that goes beyond the help file and YouTube videos providing examples, instructions, tips and tricks.
Well, as I've been wrapping up a few hobby projects, I find myself potentially with a little bit of time and I thought I might spend some cycles working on something like this. However, I've written a book before and while this won't be nearly as ambitious, I wanted to make sure that there were actually people out there that might find something like this useful.
Here's the idea...I'm thinking about creating an eBook that will cover 10-12 chapters. It will be produced as a PDF that I'll let anyone download (and will make easier for me to upload to somewhere like lulu so I can get a bound copy for my own shelf) and cover a number of topics that come up on the list and through my email. At present, I'm toying with something like:
Length: ~100-150 pg.
Chapter Outline:
1) What is MarcEdit
a. History
i. Maybe some screen shots of MarcEdit 1.0 (I still have it running on a virtualized machine)
b. Requirements
c. What can I use it for/Why would I use it
d. Future Directions
i. Including a brief discussion on the trust created around MarcEdit should something ever happen to me.
2) Getting Started
a. Installation
i. Windows/Mac/Linux
ii. Troubleshooting
b. Understanding Application Settings
c. Editing your first record
i. Two workflows - break the record/view;edit/remake for upload
3) MARC Tools
a. Character-Conversions
b. MARCEngine
c. Troubleshooting (errors)
4) Editing MARC Records
a. MarcEditor
b. Global Editing functions
i. ....
5) Automating Workflows
a. Task automation
b. Scripting/script maker
6) Regular Expressions
a. Understanding the MarcEdit Regular Expression language
b. Extensions to the language
c. Examples
d. Troubleshooting
7) More Record Editing...
a. Merging Records
b. Deduplication
8) Processing XML Documents in MarcEdit
a. XML/XSLT workflow
b. Gotchas
c. OAI Harvesting
d. XSLT/XQuery support
9) Working with Delimited Text
a. Translation Options
b. Tricks
c. Troubleshooting
10) Record Validation
a. Validator/Validating rules syntax
b. Regular Expression support
11) ???
This is a rough draft of what I'm thinking about covering. I'm not sure how long it would take me to actually get the thing written...probably 3 months, maybe a little longer depending on how much free-time I could devote to it. I'd certainly be looking for readers if I decided to take this up if there was interest.
Anyway - if anyone is interested in something like this, give me a holler. Otherwise, I'll just work on taking some of the ideas I have for this and push them out as videos on YouTube.
Thanks,
