Subject: Replacing Final Comma in 100$a
Hello,
I deleted 100$e and want to replace the final comma in 100$a with a period.
Is there a way to replace this final comma without replacing the comma between the last and first name?
Take care,
Peter Williams

I’m going to assume that there is an addition subfield following the $a. If so, then you could use an regular expression in the replace function that looks like this:
Find: (=100.*\$a[^$]*)(,)(\$.*)
Replace: $1.$3
If this potentially is at the end of the field or may have a subfield following it, then you could use this:
Find: (=100.*\$a[^$]*)(,)(\$*|.*$)
Replace: $1.$3

MarcEdit’s regular expression engine is the one found in .NET. So, this is the language reference:
Regular Expression Language - Quick Reference - .NET | Microsoft Learn <https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/standard/base-types/regular-expression-language-quick-reference>
And this an online tool that allows you to test expressions:
.NET Regex Tester - Regex Storm <http://secure-web.cisco.com/1Yf2-K9iY1WPfabsF2cX_QIHCTml9AjxeP7mxVUGuPRG6Jyx04hW3BfKHecAIR9M983m8MdrlgcsaGeIFcNLd3g-mHXfolWSiUDaOka1OufT1X73dy14bBytaO1y68wTsViOvHOqVjNbiXOvCrptFYM42dUB3Ygz3htiSuTgXzc-1z5LvI6IY_sMBIii8Pvorm1QL9qJ8H7fOXgLP1FdV519GrSYlOGlwvB8x46MSIfUTI-_lIc36puRmn586IeDRZFB79-y82wA411KcMePKzZjNf3czW8AEOHhK8ealw9aI2GKp5-zdGRKZAjxCv-dKNvdesJmWfM1X7zqRikvXW53OepOEJjiav9Uam3Izkm9RmrPc0_RjEmmSystIef-7TndHNzxUhHQNL5BxgRVlI-0macRYHl4P89x56TpiYRaYrhPGAIRpA-kKDu7ybgkZ/http%3A%2F%2Fregexstorm.net%2Ftester>

MarcEdit’s regular expression engine is the one found in .NET. So, this is the language reference:
Regular Expression Language - Quick Reference - .NET | Microsoft Learn<https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/standard/base-types/regular-expression-language-quick-reference>
And this an online tool that allows you to test expressions:
.NET Regex Tester - Regex Storm<https://secure-web.cisco.com/1u2LsFJHlcMiK6LO3Hh_7e9pz7O5-EJszXV1XyZVqTruwRJtzcCMt8AlK6qZI2mkG0KcmMWvFfU5mfTl_C6mFYLX7Ru0S088QETR-tGrIHGrg9tw8IyMJEqdPhlTnWl5N3Aa1lU5o_EcCKlkZRVGzfyCDOTe2WHg0WIuYSpFvOMgp4b3YfPWA7K1K3hhDHbA0IdJdWJYUiOlwCqTVVk8tEotTId3f25w2otXqUaWgX2MR7CthaDUg-l8LBf-E2I95rqU8t6GKjRD72LzTHRfOvCcxuHAOGG9oKyjzln4AlbWbzb4kQQTAWSWMIWIvLXu8-ART4DfBC6GV3FkqQqDks9qzrJmJ7FQ1x7TPZc3kLlVyCbx9d0jM8OgVUow3Gpit674SEVYyAZkH4RKE4Mn5TMnJ_yleHNYPIEeiWenLdI624H4KK_mEDWOWNp-Tz6Uq/https%3A%2F%2Flinkprotect.cudasvc.com%2Furl%3Fa%3Dhttp%253a%252f%252fregexstorm.net%252ftester%26c%3DE%2C1%2CHqRMsnE5Yb9vsye4Sn5k3BdOahhj7KpzwdCIVAKI094DYz0iPzAFmM318uFpPPomAao6civWMR3Jd0TR4XLDYuY5x8EbYlMG9fkSewqdNDEdnOy0coSMYY7-ig%2C%2C%26typo%3D1>

I will definitely give this a try!
I am still learning MarcEdit and am not familiar with regular expressions. Is there a resource where I could learn more about them?

I’m going to assume that there is an addition subfield following the $a. If so, then you could use an regular expression in the replace function that looks like this:
Find: (=100.*\$a[^$]*)(,)(\$.*)
Replace: $1.$3
If this potentially is at the end of the field or may have a subfield following it, then you could use this:
Find: (=100.*\$a[^$]*)(,)(\$*|.*$)
Replace: $1.$3

Subject: [MARCEDIT-L] Replacing Final Comma in 100$a
Hello,
I deleted 100$e and want to replace the final comma in 100$a with a period.
Is there a way to replace this final comma without replacing the comma between the last and first name?
Take care,
Peter Williams

Subject: Convert to UTF-8 automation?
Hello all, We receive MARC files from one vendor as MARC8 (indicated by special characters in curly braces, such as {copy} or {acute}e). Is there any way to convert these without MarcBreaker?
Running the files through MarcBreaker is an extra pre-processing step that takes time, and I would love to, for example, have it as part of an assigned task that runs in the editor. (For other files, our cataloguer is able to just run an assigned task, so these MARC8 files are a friction point in the workflow). While I'm pursuing the vendor side (i.e., send us UTF-8 records!), are there any quicker processing options I may be missing?
Many thanks in advance,
Tamarack Hockin

No, this isn’t something you can replace in a task. This is due to the large number of diacritics the tool has to process when handling the data (and the fact that you’d lose the data if printed into the editor while it is reading data as UTF8).
You could, however, not have to convert the data UTF8 via the marcbreaker – but save the file as UTF8 when completed. When compiling the data to MARC, select the UTF8 option in the dropdown list. The program will assume the data is MARC8 or a mixture of MARC8 and utf8.
